Even employees with comprehensive employer-sponsored group medical
insurance may find that the cost for coverage of their family members is just
too expensive. Or that their part-time job status makes them ineligible for
group health benefits. One option for cost-effective dependent coverage, or coverage
for employees and their family members that don’t qualify for an employer group
health program, may be a medical insurance policy specifically designed to meet the
needs of individuals.
Individual health insurance policies are available in a variety of benefit
designs. High deductible health insurance programs provide catastrophic protection at a lower
cost. Temporary health insurance policies provide cost-effective health insurance coverage for a select period of
time. And defined-benefit programs are available to coordinate with a group
policy to help cover plan co-payments and deductibles.

Terminating Employees and COBRA enrollees
Employees terminating their employment are usually eligible
for continuation of their group health insurance coverage under COBRA. Group benefits can be
expensive, however, and beyond the reach of many employees.
An individual health insurance
policy with a higher deductible may be the perfect solution for continued
protection against unexpected large medical claims. Individual health insurance policies are
also available with office visit copayments and prescription drug coverage.
Note:
Individual health insurance policies may decline coverage to cover select pre-existing
conditions. In certain situations, COBRA coverage may be a terminating
employees best alternative. Be sure to inquire about an individual policy before
your COBRA election period expires.
New Hires In Their Probationary Period
Temporary medical policies are available that coordinate with a group
plan waiting period. Newly-hired employees that must wait 30,60,90, or 180 days
to be eligible for group coverage can purchase a temporary health insurance policy to help close
their exposure to unexpected medical expense. Temporary health insurance policies are also
perfect for individuals that have a “gap” in coverage between terminating
employment and starting a new job. Today’s temporary health insurance policies are extremely
flexible and can be tailored to meet a variety of individual needs.
Out-Of-Area and International Students
Group HMO Plans usually provide coverage to
out-of-area students, but benefit levels are often limited to emergency
situations only. Group PPO plans may not contract with providers outside of
their coverage areas. Individual PPO policies are available, however, that
allow access to national provider networks. These policies protect out-of-area
students against non-discounted provider billings. They also allow for
reimbursement for non-emergency care.
International students can face special
challenges, as well. Select individual health insurance programs have been designed specifically
to meet the needs of students and others residing for extended periods outside
of the United States. In many cases, these programs are most cost-effective
than dependent coverage under an employer-paid plan.
Individual Programs for Dental, Vision, Disability, and Life Insurance
In addition to medical
protection, individual health insurance programs can provide benefits for dental and vision
services. Life insurance and disability programs are also available. These
products are designed to supplement both employer-sponsored and individual
medical plans. Premium rates are very affordable and multiple options are
available for health insurance.
We have over 30 years of experience in the development and
implementation of individual and group medical benefits programs. Give us a
